Police on Thursday arrested three
persons over the gang rape of a student of Gopalganj’s Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU).
The arrestees are Piash Sikder, 22,
Antar, 21, and Jibon, 20.
None of the three are students of
the university, said Additional Superintendent of Police Nihad Adnan, adding
that police are trying to nab the others involved in the incident.
Earlier, at 6am, students of
BSMRSTU blocked a part of the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in protest of the gang rape,
demanding the authorities arrest the perpetrators and hand out exemplary
punishment to them.
Nazrul Islam, one of the
protesting students, said their four-point demand also includes bringing
important areas frequented by university students under CCTV coverage and
beefing up security in those areas.
According to sources, the female
student was walking with her friend in the Nabinbagh area on Wednesday night.
They were whisked away in an
autorickshaw. Later, some seven-eight persons took them to an
under-construction building of Gopalganj District Administration School and
College.
Then they beat up her friend and
raped her there.
The rape survivor is undergoing
treatment at Gopalganj General Hospital.
When the news of the rape got
out, hundreds of students of the university rushed to Gopalganj Sadar police
station and issued an ultimatum demanding justice.
“We spoke to the student as soon
as we got the news and filed a case with Gopalganj Sadar police station,”
BSMRSTU Proctor Dr Raziur Rahman said.
